April 26, 1923

A meeting was held in Annandale on Tuesday to arrange for the district and county field and track meet, which is to be held here on May 12. There are four schools in the county and seven schools in the district to compete for honors.

For the month of March, J.F. Eaker had an income of over $41 from two cows. His cream check was $30.18. Milk and cream sold at his home, and butter and cream used made the total over $41.

An interesting and instructive lecture about the making of paint will be broadcasted next Monday at 6:30 p.m. from WLAG station.

Those who intend to grow cucumbers this year should call at the Citizens State Bank for seed. Next Saturday and Monday Aaron Elfstrand will be in Annandale to deliver seed.

The Board of Education voted to retain all the teachers for another school year, at a recent meeting. Two teachers, however, have decided to make a change and their places will be filled at a later date.

April 29, 1943

Annandale has exceeded its quota in the second war bond drive. The city has pledged $26,405. Surrounding areas and their pledges include Clearwater at $3,000, Corinna Township at $17,000 and French Lake Township at $9,000. Reports were not available from South Haven or Southside Township.

A 37-year-old Cokato man who eluded authorities for more than a year as a draft evader was finally arrested in Duluth last week and charged with violating the Selective Service and Training Act of 1939. He had been working for most of the year as a truck driver for a logging business.

The poor condition of Highway 55 west of Buffalo has resulted in no bus service to Annandale. With no daylight train service, no trains on Sunday, no buses and gas and tire limitations on motorists, travelers along the highway are practically stranded as far as transportation is concerned.

April 23, 1959

Members of the Catholic Church of St. Ignatius celebrated their first Mass in the new church building Tuesday afternoon. The new edifice is Mission style with a keynote of simplicity. The nave has a seating capacity of 500. The basement includes three classrooms, a dining room for 200 people and an all electric kitchen.

The Annandale Fire Department has experienced double the usual number of calls since January. This year the department has been called out 34 times, while the usual number in mid-April is 10 to 15 calls. Neighboring Sherburne County has made a number of arrests of persons setting grass fires.

A bearded, sombreroed former Kentuckian pulling a golf cart with his spare clothing, sleeping bag and other equipment totaling 150 pounds drew quite a crowd as he walked through the streets of Clearwater early Saturday morning on a hike to Anchorage, Alaska. Vern Carroll, 48, promised himself when the Alcan highway was being built that he would be the first to walk its entire length, and will cover about 4,000 miles total.

April 26, 1989

Tony Schmitz advanced to his third consecutive National Citizen Bee. Schmitz, a senior at Annandale High School, finished second out of 36 students at the state competition.

The town baseball team, the Annandale Lakers, is no longer. For the first time in 10 years, the team won’t participate in the Central Valley League. The bottom line was that the team is broke. There was no suitable field where the team could play and have concessions. Very few people came to watch the games too. Many town baseball teams raise their money to play through their concession stands. There is hope that someday people will take charge and try to start the team again.

Hockey associations are voting to consider merger. Members of the Annandale and Maple Lake hockey teams may soon be teammates. Both associations are struggling to get enough players on their teams and have enough money to pay for the cost of indoor ice time.

The large amount of boxelder bugs in the area is being blamed on the heat. When the weather cools down a bit, you can expect the population to decline.
