Girls on mend after ATV collision

Four area teenage girls are recovering from injuries received when one of two ATVs they were riding crashed into the other and they were thrown off.   All four 14-year-olds were taken to area hospitals after the accident Friday, July 16, on County Road 5 near CR 35, but three were released within a couple of days.   The fourth, who suffered a skull fracture, was expected to go home early this week.   "The doctors all said that the injuries were healable," said Scott Heidebrink, whose daughter Hannah was one of those injured, and all were expected to recover.   Rear-end crash  The Wright County Sheriff’s Department identified the girls as Courtney Alama of Cokato, Shanna Grambart of Maple Lake, Heidebrink of Annandale and Reagan Miller of Buffalo.   Initial investigation indicated a 2005 Polaris driven by Alama with Heidebrink as a passenger was northbound on CR5 just before 4 p.m. when it was struck in the rear by a 2000 Polaris driven by Miller with Grambart as a passenger.   The impact caused all of them to be thrown from the ATVs.   Ambulances took them to Buffalo Hospital where Heidebrink and Miller were transferred to St. Cloud Hospital and Alama and Grambart were moved to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.   Heidebrink was released the night of the crash, Alama the next day and Grambart on Sunday, July 18, Scott Heidebrink said.   Miller was taken to the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis for observation of a skull fracture, he said, and was to be released Sunday, July 25, or Monday, July 26.   Heidebrink said Grambart had a broken collarbone and road rash, Alama had a sprained ankle and road rash, and his daughter had scratches and scrapes.   None of the girls was wearing a helmet, the sheriff’s department said.   The department was still investigating and no charges had been filed.   The girls will be freshmen at Annandale High School in the fall. Alama and Grambart are members of the AHS cross country team, and Alama won a ninth-place medal in the 3,200-meter run at the State Track and Field Meet in June.
