
James “JJ” Johnson passed on Friday, March 1, 2024 in Minneapolis at the age of 71 after a long battle with cancer.
JJ grew up in Annandale, Minnesota, born to Earl and Doris (Peterson) Johnson.
He taught elementary school in Waubun, Minnesota, Annandale, Minnesota and Stavanger, Norway.
After receiving his Master’s Degree at St. Thomas University he worked as a Software Developer at ETA Systems, Unisys, and Cray Research. He then worked at the University of Minnesota for 25 years; most recently at their Supercomputing Institute contributing to cancer research.
JJ is survived by wife, Cheri Toftey; children Kate (Chad) Toftey Erickson, Dane Toftey Scheffler, loving granddaughters Evelyn and Eliza; siblings Sandra Hobbs, Curtis (Barb) Johnson, Dean (Barb) Johnson and Lyndon Johnson and several nieces and nephews.
JJ was a kind, gentle, and funny guy who loved his coffee and ketchup, was a skilled woodworker, and could fix most anything. He was always active, whether it be running, playing basketball or biking. He loved puzzles, crosswords and Wordle. He will be missed by family and friends and especially by his cat Freyja.
A Celebration of Life will take place at The Norway House, 913 E Franklin Ave., Minneapolis, on Monday, March 18, at 11:30 a.m.
