Joyce Marilyn Elaine Waataja

Joyce Marilyn Elaine Waataja, age 98, passed away peacefully at Maranatha Presbyterian Homes in Brooklyn Center on December 17, 2025. She was preceded in death by her husband, Evert; and son, Keith.

 She was born April 13, 1927, to Albert and Ellen Norgren of South Haven, Minn. She was one of eight children growing up on a beloved family farm. Joyce was the second oldest of her siblings: Harlan Norgren (decd.), Shirley Waataja, Carole Looman (decd.), Marleigh Rumsey, Dellas Norgren, Sherry Bates, and Diane Hess. She graduated from Annandale High School. In 1946 Joyce married Evert Waataja. They spent most of their married years raising their five children in the Mound area, but did enjoy eight years of country living in Annandale.

Joyce loved being a devoted wife, mother, homemaker and gardener. She was a faithful follower of God and loved going to church. She also cherished her Swedish heritage.

She will be deeply missed by her daughters, Linda Nemes (Michael), Darcy Loffler (Jim), Tammy Claussen (former husband Mark), and Lisa O’Reilley (Paul); 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24, at Mound Evangelical Free Church (2117 Commerce Blvd., Mound) at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior.
