The Cardinal tennis team won three matches and lost one during the opening week of the varsity girls tennis season at two meets. Annandale kicked off the new year on Monday, Aug. 24, at St. Michael-Albertville where they defeated S-MA 4-3 in the first match, lost to Andover 4-3 in the second and defeated St. Cloud Apollo 4-3 to end the tournament. "That was a great start for us," coach Scott Orvik said. "We’ve never come out ahead at this meet." Last year the Cardinals lost 6-1 to the Knights on their home court. The quadrangular is always their first competition and always a tough one, Orvik said. Wins came from singles players Kaytlin Kuefler and Amber Gallaway. "Gallaway was down 6-4 in the third set tiebreaker, but won the next four points to win the match and clinch a 4-3 victory," Orvik said. The doubles teams of Mackenzie Brown and Ariana Arlt and Haley Tallman and Stephanie Prinsen also won. Against Andover, the Cardinals were stymied by "probably the best one, two and three singles combination we’ll see this year," Orvik said. "Andover is a really tough team, but I think we gave them a much tighter match than they expected." Their final match of the day was against Apollo where the Cardinals swept the doubles arena for the win. Both second and third doubles went 3-0 on the day. But the deciding point was at No. 3 singles, Orvik said. After dropping the first set, Kuefler came back to win in a third set tiebreaker, giving Annandale another 4-3 victory. On Thursday, Aug. 27, the Cardinals hosted Rogers on newly repaired tennis courts and came away with a 6-1 victory. The team’s only loss of the day was at No. 3 doubles. The overall win avenged a 0-7 loss to Rogers last season. "Kelly Johnson looked impressive at first singles, winning easily," Orvik said. "Our first doubles team of Kelli Niebolte and Chelsey Watson were down 1-4 in the first set, but then won the next 11 games to win the match." Meanwhile, the Cardinals ‘No. 2 team of Ariana Arlt and Mackenzie Brown are off to a 4-0 start this season. This week the Cardinals were scheduled to play Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Big Lake, and will take on Delano at 4:15, Thursday, Sept. 3, at Delano.
