Nelson: Like us, immigrants want a better life

I am writing in response to the letter by Steve Michel that appeared in the Wednesday, Jan. 17, Advocate.

I appreciate so much of what he has to say, especially his plan for our immigrants’ path to citizenship. I agree: it seems that it should be that simple!

However, I began to wonder if he has talked to any recent immigrants to hear their stories. I have. I have heard and read stories from both documented and undocumented people who are nothing like what he describes as "wards of the state" expecting and demanding assistance. Those whose stories I have heard have been working hard, paying taxes at their own risk of exposure and loving this country in spite of hardship and suspicion.

I think most immigrants are people who, just like all of us, want a better life for themselves and their families. And I understand that both our state and federal economy needs these people.

It is incumbent on us to welcome and help them as Christ welcomed all.
