Council to discuss park, abatement

The Annandale City Council planned to discuss a park in Southbrook and a possible tax abatement for a new business at its regular meeting on Monday, April 1. The meeting took place after the Advocate’s deadline.

Agenda items for the council included:

■ Consider approving the development of a park in Southbrook. At their Tuesday, March 26, meeting, the Parks Commission unanimously approved a recommendation to the council to approve the purchase of 10 lots, the funding proposal and the proposed schedule.

The commission was approached by a resident last fall regarding the development of a park in Southbrook. The proposal includes the purchase of 10 lots from Annandale State Bank at a reduced price.

The initial phase of the project will include the development of an overall concept for the park, grading and seeding, and the installation of new park equipment. The Annandale Lions Club has agreed to participate with funding for the purchase of equipment and the labor to install the equipment. A group of Southbrook residents have met and are interested in participating in the planning process and doing future fundraising for other needs identified in the concept plan.

The area considered for the park would be 10 lots on Beech Circle in the development.

■ Consider approving a resolution calling for a public hearing. Platinum Plus Printing is requesting a tax abatement to relocate its business to Annandale. The business would bring approximately 75 jobs to the city and would occupy a vacant building within Annandale’s business park.

The city is required to hold a public hearing to give the public an opportunity to provide feedback on the potential abatement. City staff is proposing to hold the hearing on Tuesday, April 23, at 7 pm.

■ Consider appointing Chanda Knoof to the Planning Commission, to replace Chuck Schacht, who resigned in December. Three viable candidates were interviewed by the city administrator and it was determined that Knoof should be appointed to the vacancy.

■ Consider approving the purchase of level indicator equipment from In Control, Inc. in the amount of $9,870. This equipment monitors the water levels within the city’s water system.

■ Consider approving the purchase of replacement bulbs for the stoplights at the intersection of County Road 5 and Highway 55 from BLI Lighting Specialists. Total cost of replacing the red, green and yellow bulbs is $2,688 plus tax. The city is responsible for the maintenance of these stoplights.

Details of this meeting will be in the Wednesday, April 10, Advocate.
