Kingston will remain a city

The city of Kingston – population 89 – will remain a city for now after 36 of a total 59 voters said "no" to the question of dissolving its municipal boundaries in favor of being absorbed by Kingston Township during an election Tuesday, March 12, according to a report by the Cokato-Enterprise Dispatch.

Last fall, the city of Kingston received a petition from about one-third of the city’s residents who said they wanted to become part of Kingston Township. It was noted by petitioners that an advantage of dissolving the city would be to lower property taxes for residents. The process was previously attempted in 2002 but voters ultimately rejected the idea at that time as well, according to the Dispatch.
