The Annandale City Council has proclaimed that Thursday, Nov. 17, is ‘World Pancreatic Cancer Day’ in Annandale. Purple lights hung in Memorial Park this month have served to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease. According to information included in the council’s proclamation, over 53,000 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2016, and more than 41,000 of those cancer patients will die. Pancreatic cancer surpassed breast cancer to become the third leading cause of cancer death this year, and it is expected to be the second leading cause of cancer deaths by 2020. The five-year relative survival rate of just 8 percent is the lowest of any major type of cancer. See next week’s Advocate for more information.
