Anthony John (Tony) Matanich, Jr. died on June 13, 2024, surrounded by loving family members.
Tony was born in Biwabik, Minnesota in 1947 to Anthony and Despina Matanich. He graduated from Aurora High School and attended Dunwoody Technical Institute and Duluth Technical College before being invited to join the Army as a member of the 101st Airborne Division. He was stationed in Phu Bai, Vietnam, and was awarded the Bronze Star.
After being discharged, he joined Northern States Power in Minneapolis, where he employed his analytical talents in the Substation Construction department.
Upon retiring from NSP, Tony resided full time at his home on Clearwater Lake, Minnesota with the love of his life, Zina. He was a true “Walleye Warrior,” extracting these tasty lake inhabitants with a skill acknowledged by all. Just cruising the lake with friends and relatives on his pontoon boat kept life in perspective and provided enjoyment and peace.
Tony’s heart was as big as his beloved Clearwater Lake, always eager to share his talents and resources to support family members and those in need.
Tony leaves behind his precious wife Zina; daughter Jodi (Mike) Trapp and son Troy Matanich; grandsons Tyler, Trey, Anthony and Layne; siblings Anne Marie (Steve) Slack, Doris (Jim) Padilla, and Tom Matanich; and many nieces and nephews and friends, who were all part of Tony’s loving heart.
Per Tony’s wishes, private family gathering. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Tony’s name to Hoyt Lakes Timothy Robinson VFW Post No. 8144.
