Marvel D. Winn

Marvel D. Winn, 98, passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 13, 2025 in Lakeville, Minnesota.

Marvel was born in 1926 at home in Gary, South Dakota to Lavern Simonton and Hazel Otterdahl. She and her family moved to Minneapolis, where she graduated from South High School in 1943. Marvel met her true love, John Winn, in high school, and followed him to California after he enlisted in the Marines to serve during World War II. They were married in 1944 and went on to have three children, John, Mike (Linda), and Kathy Broderick. Marvel was a dutiful military wife and resilient, loving mother. She was a force of love and light, and had the grit and determination that defined the Greatest Generation. She eventually attended Brown Institute and worked in radio over her lifetime, most recently at KRWC 1360 AM in her late 80s!

Marvel was an award-winning marksman, master gardener, and an amazing cook. Their dream of owning a lake home was realized in 1978, where she and John taught their grandchildren to fish on Clearwater Lake in Annandale. She was a born leader and teacher, who volunteered and served in Al-Anon sponsoring many over the years, and once even self-published an amazing cookbook. Marvel had a competitive streak, and was always ready for a game of Scrabble, Pinochle, cribbage, or Acey-deucey, and loved bingo!

She will be lovingly remembered by her three children, eight grandchildren Lisa Apostolou (Nesi), Laura Vescio (Bo), John Winn (Holly), Debbie Froat (Russell), Kristy Bonsall-Winn (Taylor), Mike Winn (Sharon), Allison, Erin, and 19 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service  will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, at noon. Visitation will be a half hour prior to the service, which will be held at Bethesda Church, 15033 Highway 13 S., Prior Lake, Minnesota.

Private interment is planned.
