The second semester started this week. New subjects taught this semester include civics, economics, garment making, home management and physiology. A recent examination paper of the past semester read "Do not chew other people’s gum."
The Annandale town team nosed out the Watkins team at Watkins last Friday night, 27- 26, Lee Rackliffe slipping in the winning basket a few seconds before the final whistle blew.
Prahl’s Pharmacy announced a Foot Comfort Demonstration at their store on Nov. 27. "This demonstrator will work with out shoe fitters demonstrating the merits of Dr. Scholl’s Foot Comfort Appliances and Remedies."
Publisher, John Tygeson, writes, "There are in Annandale, as in every town, problems to be dealt with. These problems are of a varied type, some concern the uplife of its younger and older citizens, educationally and socially. Thru activities of organizations, working harmoniously, problems might be solved in a way that would meet the demands of the majority of the citizens."
January 22, 1942
A. W. Munson, commissioner from the Fifth District, will be chairman of the county board of commissioners for 1942, following last week’s meeting in which the board organized for the year.
Another draft sign-up will be held on Feb. 16. Men between the ages of 20 and 44 have been ordered to register for selective services.
At a meeting of the Village Council on Jan. 5, Ted Lundeen and Wm. Brose were appointed as street commissioners. The following were named members of the Board of Health: Dr. L.H. Bendix, Wm. Brose, O.W. Brown and Ralph Sather.
Fred Hart, who has been the Village Marshall close on to 20 years handed in his resignation to take effect Feb. 1. George Miller was appointed to succeed him.
The Annandale Boy Scouts have been rejuvenated with the news that a new scout committee has been organized, with the promise of giving help to the new troop. Some of the responsibilities include: raising the flag in front of the school each day, aid in license plate collection, and build a skating rink at the school.
Annandale basketball upset Maple Lake last Friday night. Winning only by two points, 29-27. The game was a see-saw battle the whole way through. The game was tied six different times throughout the game. Annandale only broke away with the lead on one of those ties, the last score.
January 28, 1954
James Devine, representing a Minneapolis firm, will present colored filmstrips for preview by the Silver Creek and Annandale elementary teachers at the local school.
Only 40 years have passed since Feb. 1, 1914, when the first Red Cross Water Safety courses were introduced to the world by the "amiable whale," the late Commodore Wilbert E. Longfellow. And, though styles in bathing attire have changed drastically in that time, the principles of water safety which the Red Cross has taught to 9,300,000 persons have remained constant. Waterproofing America has paid big dividends; since 1914 the drowning rate per 100,000 population has been cut in half. Water Safety is one of the many Red Cross services you support by your contributions to the annual Red Cross campaign.
The Annandale Board of Education accepted the bid of the J.M. Dain Company of Minneapolis at the opening of the bids on Thursday evening. This was the low bid with an average interest rate of 2.7902 percent for the entire issue. It might be interesting for the taxpayers of the district to know that if the bonds had been sold last summer as was anticipated at one time, the interest would have been at least $50,000 more than it will be with the present rate. The school board and the administration feel that this was a very satisfactory bid.
The Cards basketball team dropped their fifth game of the season to the Becker Bulldogs in an overtime game by a score of 35-33. At the end of the regulation time the teams were tied with 31 points apiece. The Bulldogs outfought the home team in a overtime period and went on to win 35-33. Dave Ferrell was high point man with 14, followed by Marv Smith with 9.

The possible need for a new high school came up at the Annandale Board of Education meeting. The 1922 section of the high school is the biggest concern of the members. Many are wondering how long the building will last. If it needs to be retired soon, the board will start the planning process for a new high school.
Federal funding cutbacks have forced Wright County Parks Department to backpedal a little on developing the new Clearwater-Pleasant Regional Park near Annandale.
Both girls and boys basketball teams draw media attention with a 10-0 record. The boys basketball coach, Myron Damberger, was named the WCCO Prep Parade Basketball Coach of the Week, and he was interviewed by Sid Hartman on WCCO radio last week.
Lauren Wolff took first in I-500 snowmobile race. The race started in Thunder Bay and extended all the way to White Bear Lake.
Laura Manuel is a freshman at St. Cloud State University. She was the Advocate’s intern in the summer of 2012. Stephanie Prinsen, the daughter of Steve and Sharon, is a freshman at the College of St. Scholastica.
