May 17, 1906

The First annual Field Day of the Interscholastic Track Athletic Association of Wright County will be held at the Howard Lake Fairgrounds on Saturday, May, 19, at 2 p.m. Admission 25 cents. This association was organized this year and includes the high schools of Monticello, Buffalo, Delano, Howard Lake, Cokato and Annandale. Some of the events to be run were a 100-yard dash, 220-yard dash, putting 12-pound shot and many others.

The municipal league of the state is beginning to get results by agitating the rate question. There have been hearings before the railway commission this week which show discriminations, not only in favor of the cities, but between towns in the southern part of the state.

The Paynesville ball team came down on Saturday and played a return game with the local team. Annandale took the honors 7 to 4 which makes a third game necessary to settle matters. Paynesville has one of the most gentlemanly teams which has ever played here, and it was "ball" from start to finish. A large number of people came down with the team spending the day pleasantly.

Plans were being perfected for a proper observance of Decoration Day at Annandale May 30.

May 20, 1926

Appreciative audience enjoy the senior class play. Pearl Hendrixon and Arvid Aronson in the leading roles were exceptionally good.Annual commencement exercises will be held on June 3 in the school auditorium. The speaker is F. J. Kelly, Dean of Administration of the University of Minnesota. The class numbers 31. Florence Bahr was the valedictorian.

Former local resident Mrs. Jane Parsons succumbs at old age.

Axel Tandberg, proprietor of the Sanitary Bakery, made his first trip outside with his new truck. Demands came on so strong from surrounding towns from Annandale bakery service that Mr. Tandberg decided to put it on.

The May Day program of school will take place May 21. Event will be great outdoor festival as capping climax of school year.

May 17, 1951

Annandale opened its North Star League season Sunday by walloping a good Howard Lake team 12-3. The locals got off to a roaring start and never slowed down. The battery of Warren Erickson and Bill Elvurm of Minneapolis kept good control of the situation and will prove to be a big help in the coming league race.

Fishing opened in the local lakes Saturday with reports of varied success, from good to bad. Cedar Lake produced one of the largest fish caught, an 8 pound, 2 ounce walleye. Lake John fishermen report a better than average catch.

The school band, numbering 60 members, will present two concerts in Princeton and Sauk Rapids on May 22. Supt. Tripp and director Kalash will accompany the band.

Patrolman Jack Schmieg at Howard Lake is cracking down on teenage auto drivers, and arrests are being made to curb the unlawful drivers and speeders. More power to Schmieg.

Public Health Nurse, Mariette Landwehr, has set up a tentative schedule for her home and school visits in the county. Those requesting her services are asked to write or call at the Buffalo court house. The phone number is 210-J.

May 21, 1986

The total increase in offenses in 1985 handled by the Wright County Sheriff’s office was 12 percent over the previous year. And the number of calls received increased over the previous year 21 percent, according to the 1985 annual Sheriff’s Report just released.

Annandale High School junior Jeff Hochstein, a tall boy with a deep voice who seems mature beyond his years, received the 3M Creativity in Science Award Wednesday afternoon from science teacher Tom Smart. Hochstein was chosen by the "entire science department" at the high school for his work under the Quest Program, a project to enhance learning for gifted students.

The annual Annandale Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 26, in front of the Annandale Public Library. The high school band and a group of area veterans will march to the north end of Oak Street where flower petals will be spread on the waters of Pleasant.

Although the Minnesota department of Health has expanded its recently announced measles alert to include the whole state, the Annandale School District has not had any reported cases of measles since winter said school nurse Fern Mattson.

Annandale High School placed second in a bench-press meet the weekend of Saturday, May 10. This was Annandale’s first meet since the weight-lifting facility was expanded this spring, and Coach Kevin Scott said he was especially pleased. The Annandale team competed against eight other schools.

Trevor Prinsen is the son of Steve Prinsen and Sharon Schumacher. The Annandale High School graduate is a junior at the University of Minnesota, Morris.
