I remember the first conversation I had with my mother-inlaw. How could I forget? I asked her for her daughter’s phone number. It was September of 1981. I was coming back through Mankato, on my way to college, after a summer job in Virginia. I did not have a girlfriend at the time or if I did, whatever spark there was back in my college town in the Black Hills, I’m sure she forgot about me soon after I was out of sight.
