Cathedral ends Cardinals’ streak

The Cardinal volleyball team’s winning streak came to an end last week with losses to St. Cloud Cathedral and Delano.   Senior captain Brianna Barrett had 12 kills and 20 set assists in Annandale’s 3-1 loss to the Crusaders on Tuesday, Sept. 22, in St. Cloud.   After losing the first two games 25-20, the Cardinals came back for a 25-17 win in the third game, then lost a 25-23 heartbreaker in game four to end the match.  The Cardinals traveled to Delano on Thursday, Sept. 24, hoping to rebound from Tuesday night’s loss, but they couldn’t overcome a tough Delano team.  After clinching the first bout 25-22, the Cardinals lost the next three games for a final score of 3-1.  Barrett had 11 kills and 15 set assists in the loss.   "It was a tough week for us," coach Pam Fliegel said.   "We played two very good volleyball teams and came out on the short end of the stick both nights.  "We were disappointed with our performance at St. Cloud Cathedral and didn’t really show up to play.   "On Thursday, however, we lost to an excellent Delano team and I was very pleased with our girls.   "We came out strong and played with them the whole match. We have nothing to hang our heads about. We played hard until the very end."   Annandale is now 12-3 overall and 1-1 in the Wright County Conference.  The Cardinals were scheduled to host two games this week: Big Lake on Monday, Sept. 28, and Watertown-Mayer at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29.   Annandale will travel to Waconia for a 7 p.m. conference game Thursday, Oct. 1.
