Records continue to fall for Cardinals

Annandale gymnasts continued their record-smashing spree last week, scoring the most points in a meet in school history and establishing two other marks in a win over Delano on Friday, Feb. 2.  The Cardinals defeated the Tigers 137.15-131.975 to top the Annandale mark of 136.05 set in 2000-01.  They also set new team records on the uneven bars, 33.4 vs. 33.0 in 2000-01, and the balance beam, 34.3 vs. 34.225 a week ago against Watertown-Mayer.  And Jenna Woelfel scored 36.7 in winning the all-around to better her own record of 36.55 set against Litchfield in January.  The victory over Wright County Conference rival Delano gives the Cardinals a 6-2 record in the conference and 8-2 overall as they prepare for their last regular-season meet and the section meet in less than two weeks.  Last week’s marks come on top of six other team and individual records set by freshman Woelfel and her teammates in the past month.  "When we talk about putting it together at the right time, this is it," coach Nicole Green said.  "To stay as consistent as we can be going into sections is the ultimate goal.   "In gymnastics, anything can happen. Consistency outweighs big skills. We have been very consistent."  Green said she wants to go into the section meet "strong and determined to make a name for ourselves."  The Cardinals are a young team, she said, but that’s the exciting part.  "The talent level in the gym is awesome. They keep pushing each other to keep getting better and stronger. They haven’t even tapped into all the possibilities they are capable of."  The Annandale junior varsity lost to the Delano JV 124.17 to 110.2, but set a high score for the season.  The Cardinals will host Rockford on Friday, Feb. 9, at the middle school. JV action begins at 6 p.m.  The Section 5A tournament will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at Becker High School.  Scores from the Delano meet:  Vault – 1. Jenna Woelfel (A), 9.4; 2.
