The Cardinal girls tennis team was 3-2 after a momentous win over St. Cloud Cathedral on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the College of St. Benedict. Annandale’s 4-3 win was its first victory over the Crusaders since the Cardinals became a team four years ago. The two teams met for the first time this season at a triangular at St. Ben’s. Annandale also beat St. John’s Prep that day 7-0. In singles, Annandale’s Erica Doppenberg lost to Alicia Otto of Cathedral 6-4, 6-0; Brooke Williams of Annandale lost to Michaela Clinton of Cathedral 6-0, 6-2; Annandale’s Faith Fretham beat Cathedral’s Caroline Stringer 6-1, 6-1 and Brittany Williams of Annandale beat Cathedral’s Kari Meemken 6-6 and 7-3, 6-0 in the tie breaker. In doubles, the pair of Angie Niebolte and Cassidy Williams of Annandale lost to Matia Twedt and Lisa Scheevel of Cathedral 6-0 and 6-0; Cardinals Jessica Stuhr and Emily Barkley beat Aubrey Barnaby and Bridget Harguth 6-4 and 7-5; Paige Storkamp and Jennie Koenigs beat Crusaders Katie Carlson and Megan Welle 4-6, 6-2 and 10-7 in the tie breaker. In an exhibition match, fifth singles Anna Johnson of Annandale beat Allie Jameson 6-3 and 6-1. The Cardinals fared even better against St. John’s Prep. In first singles Doppenberg won her match 6-0, 6-1. Mary Stang of St. John’s went home with the loss. In second singles, Brooke Williams beat Ann Mullin 6-1, 6-1; in third singles, Faith Fretham beat Sophia Heymans 6-4, 6-0; in fourth singles, Brittany Williams beat Hannah Miller 7-5, 6-0. In first doubles, the pair of Niebolte and Cassidy Williams beat Samantha Lloyd and Beret Fitzgerald 6-0, 6-0; in second doubles, Stuhr and Barkley beat Chloe Heymans and Sophia Rimpler 6-0, 6-0; in third doubles, Johnson and Koenigs beat Jacki Geiger and Viviana Choi 6-4, 6-1. In the exhibition match, fifth singles player Storkamp of Annandale beat Amani Yassin 6-0,6-1. The Cardinals competed again on Thursday, Aug. 31, at home against Wright County Conference rival Mound-Westonka, but results were not available at press time. They will compete at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at Glencoe-Silver Lake and on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Becker. On Monday, Sept. 11, they will host their second home game. This one will be against Sartell-St. Stephen and it will begin at 4:30 p.m. at Annandale Middle School.
