The Annandale softball team went 3-0 last week against Wright County Conference foes, leaving them tied for first in the conference with Delano. Both have one loss to their name. Annandale started out the winning streak with a doubleheader at home against Watertown-Mayer. The Cardinals jumped to a quick lead, which turned into a 9-4 win. AJ Hoefer started the scoring in the second inning by getting on base on a walk. Liz Boltz then walked and both scored when Amy Dezell singled. They added two more runs in the third when a hit by Melissa Opatz scored Kelly Berg and Breann Woelfel. They went on a roll in the fifth inning, scoring five more times on hits by Hoefer, Opatz, Heather Schultz, Boltz, Dezell and Latour. Watertown-Mayer got four runs in the sixth, but they never threatened or came close to the Cardinals. “Any time you play a doubleheader you hope to get a good start like that,” coach Skip Dolan said. “But you’re still always a little worried about the second game, about the players’ mentality. I was very pleased with how the girls played.” Annandale won the second game by an even wider margin, 10-2. Hoefer started things off in the first by getting on base on an error. Opatz singled and both players scored on Boltz’s double. Annandale added four more in the third on six consecutive hits, one more in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth. Watertown had runs in the sixth and the seventh. Dezell, Berg and Woelfel went one for four; Latour and Opatz went two for four; Hoefer and Boltz went three for four and Schultz went two for three besides pitching both games. Ashley Hennen filled in for catcher Lisa Morris, who was out with the flu. “She stepped in as catcher, a position she hasn’t played in two years,” Dolan said, ”and did a great job.” On Saturday, April 22 Annandale traveled to Litchfield where they beat the home team 15-2. The Cardinals started quick, putting up four runs in the second; two in the third; two in the fourth; two in the sixth and five in the seventh. Berg was three for five with a triple, a home run and a double. Woelfel went four for five with a home run a double and a single. “Our hitting is really coming around,” Dolan said. Boltz went two for four. Morris went two for three and Latour went two for five. The Cardinals were scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at home against Delano. Then they’ll hit the road Thursday, April 27, for a 4:30 p.m. game at Waconia and Saturday, April 29, for an 11 a.m. contest at Monticello.
