Cards win two meets

The Annandale boys track team took first in two meets last week.   On Monday, April 18, the Cardinals scored higher than Becker, Delano and Waconia at the Wright County Conference Quadrangular in Delano.   Annandale recorded 12 first-place finishes out of 18 events.   “That was pretty impressive for us,” coach Jim Schimelpfenig said. “In general, the team had a really good day.”   The track team had perfect weather for the meet.   Ryan Oster had a “tremendous” day in the hurdles, the coach said.   He took first place in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.5 and then won the 300 meter hurdle race with a time of 43.7.  Mike Planer had a strong discus throw of 126 feet to win the event and Jake Regnier pole vaulted 12 feet for first.   Luke Hinz took home firsts in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 8 inches and the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.6 seconds.   David Queck won the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.6 and Nick Demarais won the 400 meter dash with a time of 54.1.   Russ Trusty won the 800 meter run with a time of 2.12.6.   The Annandale 4×200 relay team of Hinz, Demarais, Ryan Koenigs and Queck won with a time of 1.34.7; the 4×100 meter relay team of Hinz, Rudningen, Koenigs and Queck won with a time of 45.1, and the 4×400 team of Chris Thurber, Ryan Oster, Trusty and Demarais won with a time of 3.43.4.   Annandale’s 4×800 relay team of Ben Hylla, Blake Hemminger, Joel Del Angel and Shane Pallies earned second with their time of 9.42.1.   Joe Yotter placed second in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4.54; Kyle Rudningen placed second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 54.7 and Koenigs was second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, eight inches.   Rudningen also placed third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.8; Koenigs was third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.1; Yotter was third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2.14.5 and Kyle Stommes was third in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11.36.4.   Annandale’s team score was 152.33; Delano was second with 123.33; Waconia was third with 78.33 and Becker was fourth with 52 points.   Lakes invite  On Thursday, April 21, Annandale won its own Heart of the Lakes Invite.   The Cardinals finished first out of eight teams. They earned 178 points; Glencoe-Silver Lake was second with 165.5 points; Delano was third with 127.5; Waconia was fourth with 70; Maple Lake was fifth with 67; Dassel-Cokato was sixth with 36; Rockford was seventh with 29 and Lester Prairie-Howard Lake-Waverly Winsted was eighth with nine points.   “It was another perfect day for a track meet,” Schimelpfenig said.  The weather was sunny without much wind for the lineup of athletes.  Oster took firsts in the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles again with times of 16.4 and 43 seconds; Demarais won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:01.6; Hinz won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 4 inches and Regnier won the pole vault with a height of 11 feet.   The 4×200 team of Hinz, Thurber, Scott Harloff and Demarais won with a time of 1.36; the 4×100 relay team of Rudningen, Thurber, Harloff and Koenigs won with a time of 45.4 seconds, and the 4×400 team of Rudningen, Thurber, Koenigs and Demarais won with a time of 3:35.4.   “The relays did an outstanding job,” Schimelpfenig said.   Hinz also took second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.2. He was beaten by Jesse Pasusta of G-SL, who ran it in 11.1.   He was second in the 200 meter dash as well with a time of 22.5. Pasusta just edged him again with a time of 22.2.  Yotter placed second in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 4:52.2; Coty Eckerman was second in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 9 inches and Planer was second in the discus with a throw of 125.1 feet.   Queck set a new school record in the 400 meter dash, breaking the record set by Steve Kangas in 1977.   Queck’s time of 51.2 earned him third place. Pasusta of G-SL won the event in 49.6 and a D-C athlete earned second with a time of 49.8. Both of those athletes ran at state, Schimelpfenig said.   The former record was 51.52.   Queck also earned third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.4; in the 200 meter dash with a time 23.5 and in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 4 inches.   Koenigs tied for second in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 8 inches.   “It was another great team effort,” Schimelpfenig said. “We put together our best lineup to win it and we did.”   The Cardinals were scheduled to compete Monday, April 25, at Dassel-Cokato in another WCC quad.   On Friday, April 29, they will compete at 4:30 p.m. at the Holdingford Invite.   They are scheduled to host their own WCC Quad at 4 p.m. Monday, May 2.
