Girls finish first, boys fourth

The Cardinals track team competed at the Section 5A subsection competition at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted on Tuesday, May 19. The Annandale girls took first place, and the boys finished fourth.

There are eight teams in the 5A subsection including Annandale, Maple Lake, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, Rockford, Spectrum Legacy Christian Academy, North Lakes Academy and St. Cloud Christian.

Individuals that qualify now move to the Section 5A meet to be held Wednesday, May 27, at St. John’s University. From there top performers will advance to the MSHSL State Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday, June 5 and 6.

Girls finish in first

The Cardinal girls track team finished in first place at the subsection meet with 177 points, followed by 2. Maple Lake, 169; 3. Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, 107; 4. Rockford, 92.5; 5. Spectrum, 79; 6. Legacy Christian Academy, 37; 7. North Lakes Academy, 13; and 8. St. Cloud Christian, 7.

The Cardinal girls had 16 individuals advance in 15 events.

"The only events we did not advance in were the 4×400, the triple jump and the 200-meter run," said Cardinal head girls coach Bo Wilke. "Eleven of the qualifiers advanced in multiple events, which is an indicator of the depth of talent on this year’s team."

In order to advance an athlete needs to finish in the top four in individual events or the top two relays. There is also a section qualifying standard which, if it is achieved in the finals of the sub-section, allows an athlete to advance as well.

Boys take fourth

The Cardinal boys took fourth place out of the eight teams competing at the Section 5A subsection meet. Maple Lake took first place with 202 points, followed by 2. Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, 135; 3. Rockford, 134.5; 4. Annandale, 102.5; 5. Spectrum, 44; 6. St. Cloud Christian, 37; 7. Legacy Christian, 22; 8. North Lake Academy 1.

"We ran very well and set a bunch of personal bests," said boys head coach Cal Froehlich. "I am proud of the way the boys performed and glad to be sending a bunch to sections.

Zach Chollett had a good day, setting bests in the 4×200 relay and the 200 meters.

Although they did not advance to the Section 5A finals, Froelich had good comments about Zach Boos and Chris Bigalk, two that came very close.

"Zach Boos had a good time in a very tough two-mile field, as did Chris Bigalk in the 800," Froehlich said.

Boys advancing to the Section 5-1A finals Wednesday, May 27, include: The 4×800 team of Boos, Bigalk, Jamie Kasper and Jeffrey Braun; the 4×200 team of Chollett, Spencer Ogden, Seth Johnson and Alex Hohenstein; Jeffrey Braun, 400 meter; Kasper, 300 hurdles; Trae Bedford, pole vault; Chollett, 200 meter; Ogden, 200 meter; Cole Olson, shot put; and Thomas Gross, discus.

Surprisingly, the boys 4×100 relay team (Chollett, Ogden, Hohenstein and Johnson) did not advance to the Section-1A finals.

"We actually took first by quite a bit, but were disqualified because they said that we handed the baton off before we got in the exchange zone," said Hohenstein. "But we are almost positive that we were in the zone."

The first-place team, Rockford, finished the race in 45.73. Last week the Cardinal 4×100 team finished with a 45.86 time.

"It was actually our best race of the year, but a line judge for the last exchange zone between Seth (Johnson) and I said that we had switched the baton before the exchange started," Ogden said.

"We have video footage of me clearly getting it in the zone, but there was no appeal process to straighten it out. It cost us our chance at another state relay. The four of us will use this as motivation. We are all ready to get back to Hamline in spite of that."
