Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Place of the Dexter (Iowa) Sentinel motored into Annandale last Thursday morning in time for a refreshing cup of coffee and breakfast at the Robert Theide home. So anxious were they to get to the Minnesota lakes for a good fishing trip, that they drove all night, and Mr. Place was on the lake at an early hour enticing some of the better type of the finny tribe to sample his bait. The fish were foolish, of course, but they cannot all be wiseacres, and having caught a nice mess, Editor Place entered into a state of inactivity and dreamed of pounding out a two column story on "Why Hoover Should be President." The fish were not interested in his story, however.

Throughout the last week the jinx pursued to local baseball club and they returned defeated from both their out of town games. On Thursday, they traveled to Howard Lake and engaged with Fair Haven in an exhibition game, the occasion being the Middleville Mutual Fire Insurance Company’s picnic. Although playing a good defensive game, they could not connect with the ball enough times to produce the necessary runs.

The P. B. O’Laughlin barn was struck by lightning during Saturday’s storm. Mr. O’Laughlin was in the barn at the time. He was stunned from the shock and fell over as also were the five horses in the barn. The bolt seemed to travel along the track and run down the side into the ground. No damage was done to the barn.

Parental involvement and citizen participation are not new ideas. The democratic form of government in ancient Greece, the town meeting in New England, elected school boards are all expressions of the need for and value of participation in the decision making process on the part of people affected by these decisions. Recently there has been a sharply renewed emphasis on the concept of parental involvement in government funded education programs. With the passage of Title I in 1965, says Arlen M. Johnson, elementary principal, monies have been made available to support programs to meet the special educational needs of certain educationally deprived children.

Lt. Jim Powers, Wright County Deputy Sheriff, is appointed to the FBI National Academy. Powers will report to the training facility Quantico, Virginia on June 25. The course of instruction lasts for 12 weeks and consists of investigative procedures and techniques. Upon completion of the course, Powers will return to his regular duties in Wright County as an investigator and administrative aid to Sheriff David Wolff.

Two area ministers will be preaching their last sermons to local congregations this summer, as both clergy leave parish work to pursue other kinds of administrative and academic ministries. Rev. Patricia Hinker, pastor of the Zion Untied Methodist Church of South Haven and the Kimball United Methodist Church, will be preaching her last sermon to both congregations this Sunday, June 27.

With the Heart of the Lakes Triathlon less than three weeks away, local entrants are focusing on the upcoming competition. Greg Roth, new co-director of the triathlon this year and sole director in 1994, wants to emphasize that the event is scheduled one week earlier than in previous year. More than 200 Annandale community members will operate the race for the fourth consecutive year. Annandale has had triathlon for the last eight years, but only recently has it become such an important event.

Three times isn’t always a charm. A group of citizens, concerned over construction for CSAH 19 learned the error of that proverb at the June 15 meeting of the Wright County Board, as the commissioners unanimously denied a request to limit construction on CSAH 19. The group represented by CSAH 19 neighbor Margaret Hurst, was making its third visit to the board, this time requesting formally that the board nominate CSAH 19 for Natural Preservation Route (NPR) status. The construction is between the cities of Rockford and Hanover.

The dream of a community center in Annandale complete with pool and indoor ice rink may be closer than people think. The Annandale community Center Committee, part of the Annandale Area Community Team, has a goal to have something done or in the process of being built within the next 10 years. But first, they will have to overcome two of their biggest obstacles, land and money.

After more than a half century of supporting veterans and community causes, South Haven Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7332 plans to disband because old age is overtaking its members. The move became public last week when officials turned over the South Haven post office, which the VFW has owned and rented to the federal government for 47 years, to the city.

Some nearby property owners want a stoplight at Highway 55 and County Road 6 east of Annandale to prevent fatal crashes like one that killed a Howard Lake student last month. But the Minnesota Department of Transportation says traffic on CR 6 doesn’t meet its standards for a signal and it has no plans to put one there. The Wright County Highway Department, however, says it plans to realign the road next year to improve a difficult angle at the intersection.
