
Maynard A. Nilson, age 84, of Annandale died Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family. The memorial service was held Saturday, June 17, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Annandale with Rev. Alex Becker and Rev. Todd Nelsen officiating. Lunch followed. Burial took place at the church cemetery. Visitation was 90 minutes prior to the service from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Memorials to Quiet Oaks Hospice House were preferred. Maynard Allen Nilson was born May 28, 1939 in Southside Township, one of the 12 children of Emil and Laura (Pick) Nilson. He graduated from Annandale High School in 1957. Following graduation, Maynard worked as a carpenter, before joining his parents, Laura and Emil Nilson, in the real estate business. Maynard was a realtor for over 60 years. He was the real estate broker at Wood Shol Company and Wright County Realty, Inc. His last years, he was a realtor at RE/MAX. He was a devoted member at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Annandale where he was baptized and confirmed. He served as the head usher and treasurer, as well as serving on the building committee. Maynard was active in the Annandale Chamber of Commerce, serving as the General Chairman of the Fourth of July Committee for 23 years. He was also a Southside Township board member. On June 12, 1983, Maynard was united in marriage to Betty Duquenne at St. John’s Lutheran Church. They enjoyed their family, traveling, and doing everything together. Maynard was an avid outdoorsman who loved deer hunting and fishing trips – along with being the head cook and organizer of many such events. He cherished the time and memories he made with Betty and his family at their Lake Sylvia home. He was a generous man and would often offer rides to elderly church members. Maynard wholeheartedly loved his family, and they were his greatest joy. He will be forever missed. He was dad to six and second dad to many. Everyone who knew Maynard loved Maynard. He had the biggest heart. Maynard is survived by his wife, Betty Nilson of 40 years, of Annandale; children, Julie (Tom) Kiernan of Buffalo, Trisha (Scott) Rollag of Monticello, Scott (Michelle) Nilson of South Haven, Tim (Michelle) Engle of Annandale, and Carrie (Bill) Sjobolm of St. Cloud; son-in-law, John Belan of Isanti; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Alice (John) Wolfe, Maurice (Jean) Nilson, Floss Nilson, and Rosemary Nilson; and many nieces, nephews and other family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Laura Nilson; daughter, Susan Belan; and seven siblings. Julie Kiernan, John Belan, Trisha Rollag, Scott Nilson, Tim Engle and Carrie Sjobolm will serve as urn bearers.
