Dean R. Custer

Dean R. Custer, age 91, of Annandale, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2024, at the Annandale Care Center.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel in Annandale with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Todd Nelsen will officiate. Burial will be at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Waverly.

Dean Roland Custer was born Dec. 2, 1932, in Howard Lake, Minnesota the ninth of ten children to Warren and Agnes Custer. Dean grew up on the family farm and attended Rice Lake School before graduating from Howard Lake High School. On July 21, 1956, Dean married Carolyn Vaughn at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia Heights. They made their home in Fridley, until moving to Cedar Lake near Annandale in 1992. Dean worked as a tool and die maker in addition to farming.

Dean’s childhood was marked by tragedy, losing his father at the age of 11. This experience shaped him into a resilient and determined individual, known for his adventurous spirit and zest for life. He was a devoted husband, sharing a love for travel with his wife and creating cherished memories together.

A hard worker by nature, Dean found joy in fixing motors and other mechanical tasks, showcasing his skill and dedication in everything he did. His passion for the outdoors led him to the lake and cabin, where he found peace and contentment in nature’s beauty. Dean was a social soul, finding joy in the company of cherished family and friends, creating lasting bonds through shared experiences and laughter.

Dean is survived by his children, Rick (Laura) of Loretto, Dan (Kris Boege) of Nisswa, and Kathy (Dean) Dahlgren of Andover; nephew, Randy Wessman of Exeland, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren, Kyle, Corie, Megan, Libby, Erik, Caitlan, and Teresa; seven great-grandchildren Saydee, Sicily, Raymond, Harper, Avery, Addison and baby girl Seidl; sister, Delores Wessman of Burnsville; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Agnes; wife, Carolyn; daughter-in-law, Diane; brothers, James, Milton, Amos, Donald, and Wayne; sisters, Pearl Gruenhagen, Evelyn May, and Genevieve Miller; and nephew Rick Wessman.

Dean’s grandchildren will serve as the urn bearers.
