Richard Duane Bateson, 92, passed away on June 1, 2025, at The Estates at Roseville with family at his side. A service at Fort Snelling National Cemetery was held Tuesday, July 1, at 9 a.m.

Richard “Doc” Bateson was born in Hibbing, Minn., to Katheryn Louise (Deering) and John Alvin Bateson on January 28, 1933. He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings.

After high school, he served in the Army from May 1953 through October 1954, and then the Army Reserves until February 1955. After returning home, he attended the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and became a dentist. He practiced dentistry most of his life, retiring in Annandale, Minn., in December 1998. In his youth, he enjoyed sports. He spent many hours watching his kids participate in Annandale sports, which he loved. After retirement, he enjoyed doing yardwork, eagle watching, square dancing and traveling with Alberta.

He leaves behind Alberta Brown, his life partner; children, Cindy (Tom) Gallagher of Lakeville, Debra Bateson of Sacramento, Calif., Rick (Sue) Bateson of Victoria, Kara (Trent) Lampi of Annandale, and Chad (Laura-fiance) Bateson, of Eden Prairie; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Also, his bonus family of four children: John (Pam) Brown of Winona, Donavan Brown of St. Cloud, Joy (Greg) Hurd of Becker, and Dan (Robyn) Brown of Dalbo;  nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
