Cards top Maple Lake in the gym

The Annandale gymnastics team competed against the Maple Lake Irish on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Annandale Middle School. The Cardinal gymnasts defeated the Irish 128.45 to 125.05.

Head coach Sarah Zieska has said that a team total of 130 point per meet is a goal.

"With a 128.45 against Maple Lake, we were very proud of our girls at the end of the night," Zieska said.

The Cardinals started the night with MacKenzie Norgren injured on the floor during warm-ups. Later during the meet Anna Mitchell suffered a possible concussion during her performance on the balance beam.

"Our team held together well and stayed focused throughout, finishing the meet," said Zieska.

Annandale outperformed Maple Lake on the vault, 34.175-34.05; the floor, 35.875-33.325; and uneven bars, 29.375-28.40. Maple Lake edged the Cardinals on the beam, 29.275-29.025.

The Cardinals had a season team-high of 34.875 on the floor exercise.

"That is only 1.03 points away from the school record, 36.09 set in 2009-10," Zieska said.

Annandale’s Madison Kasper took first place honors on the floor and was the No. 1 gymnast in the all-around.

"The team had many personal season highs. The floor and vault were our strengths and we are focusing hard on bars and the beam in practices," Zieska said. "We are looking for a fast recovery with MacKenzie and Anna’s injuries so we can get them back into our line up."
