Community breakfast Saturday

The Annandale Food Shelf is partnering with several other local organizations to offer a free breakfast to feed the hungry from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, at Minnesota Pioneer Park’s Big Woods building.

"We have planned a delicious breakfast of french toast, fruit, scrambled eggs, sausage, juice, milk and coffee," said Ed Skomoroh, president of the Annandale Food Shelf. "We really want people who are in need to attend."

"This is our first attempt to reach out to the hungry in the Annandale community by offering a free breakfast," Skomoroh said.

"Some people are reluctant to attend things at a church, especially if they do not have a church," Skomoroh said. "We think Pioneer Park will be a neutral site and many will feel more comfortable attending."

Love INC (Love in the Name of Christ) is a national, non-profit ministry made up of affiliated churches to provide coordinated help to people experiencing difficulties in their lives.

The Buffalo organization is called Love INC-Big Woods and has affiliated churches in Buffalo and Maple Lake. They have been providing the Saturday morning free breakfasts for many years.

Love INC is looking to expand its outreach to the poor in Annandale and already two churches, St. Ignatius Catholic Church and St. John’s Lutheran have expressed interest in sponsoring future breakfasts.

"They get as many as 70 to 80 at each free breakfast," said pastor Luke Baehr, Silver Creek Community Church. "Since this is the first time in Annandale, we think we will serve about 40 people."

The breakfast will be cooked by volunteers from Silver Creek Community Church, a Love INC affiliated church.

"We have close to 10 volunteers to cook and serve the breakfast," Baehr said.

Other sponsors of the free Saturday breakfast include Cub Foods of Buffalo, Marketplace of Annandale, Cargill’s Sunny Fresh Foods.

The Annandale Food Shelf has been responsible for the advertising and promotion of the event.

"We have been handing out flyers to all of our food shelf customers, urging them to attend," Skomoroh said.

"Please pass the good news on to your friends and neighbors, seniors and others that might be struggling," Skomoroh said. "We are encouraging people that are not struggling to consider attending the event to show support for the program and possibly make a donation."
