Hot Mess

The regular morning garbage collection route included some excitement Wednesday morning, June 24, when the garbage in the back of a West Central Sanitation truck caught fire. A resident on Chestnut Street informed the driver that his load was smoking, and the driver proceeded to the gravel section of Poplar Avenue N just behind the fire station where he dumped the load. Annandale firefighters simply pulled a truck out of the garage and hosed down the now-flaming garbage pile. The driver said he suspected that the fire was caused by someone discarding coals or some other type of hot load, and said that the company has dealt with a number of such fires.
