Diane Aliina Nelson Hoiland was born on July 25, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Alfred and Martha (Johnson) Nelson. She died after a battle with cancer at her home on April 3, 2020.
She grew up on a farm in French Lake township, south of Annandale. She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior as a young girl and lived her life for Him. She graduated from Annandale High School in 1959 and then moved to Minneapolis where she worked at Billy Graham Association then at Honeywell where she met Dave. On May 1, 1965, Diane was united in marriage to Dave Hoiland of Benson, MN, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Annandale. She worked mainly as a mail carrier for over 20 years when she retired in 2002.
Dave and Diane moved to Maple Plain in 1968. They lived there for 30 years where they raised their family. After retirement, they built a house on Howard Lake and lived there for 8 years. Due to Dave’s health issues, they moved to a townhouse in Buffalo and wintered in Arizona for 12 years.
Diane’s greatest joy was her family. She loved her two children and eight grandchildren, especially going to their activities. She spent many years as Dave’s “full-time” nurse, sacrificing many of life’s pleasures to help him. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, attending church, serving the Lord & others, playing cards, and the companionship of her dog, Paddy. Her sweet smile, blue eyes, and friendly disposition will be greatly missed.
Diane is survived by their two children, Denise (Keith) Olander of Staples (and their children Benjamin, Allison, and Isabella); Derrick (Michelle) Hoiland of Delano (and their children Logan, Carson, Emilee, Breckyn and Adrianna); siblings, Barb Razink of Benson; Kay (Orleigh) Pring of Apache Junction, Arizona; brother-in-law, Butch Puchalski of Benson; sister-in-law, Maryls Hoiland of Benson; Dennis (Kathy) Nelson of Holmen, Wisconsin; Joyce (Ric) Rynders of Acampo, California; Ron (Gretchen) Nelson of Fridley; Joanne Pieske of Shakopee; Les (Gloria) Nelson of Annandale; Clair Nelson of Annandale; Mike (Jan) McGuire of Farmington; and many loving relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Hoiland; parents, Alfred and Martha Nelson; father and mother-in-law, Fred and Alice Hoiland; sister, Arloueen (Nelson) McGuire, sisters-in-law, Anne Nelson, LuAnn Nelson, and Ellen (Hoiland) Puchalski; brothers-in-law, Dean Pieske, Roger Hoiland and Paul Razink; and niece, Janel Rynders.
