In honor of Leo, please consider wearing Kimball blue and gold. Leo John Wirth was born Dec. 17, 1940, in Walcott, North Dakota to Alphonse and Esther (Sommerfeld) Wirth. As a young boy, Leo moved with his family to the Bertha-Hewitt area. He was a 1958 graduate of Bertha-Hewitt Public School. Leo then continued his education at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1962. He honorably served his country in the United States Army. In 1964, Leo began a 36-year career with the Kimball Area Public Schools and immersed himself in the Kimball school and community. While working at the school, Leo began dating a coworker, Marilyn Thom. On Aug. 18, 1972, they were united in marriage at Zion United Methodist Church in South Haven. They became members of Kimball United Methodist, where Leo served as treasurer, served on the building committee, served pancakes with the men’s group, represented the church at the annual Methodist Conference, and offered a helping hand as needed. He was a mentor to many at the church and in the community. During his time at the school, Leo taught vocational agriculture, science, served as vice-principal and retired in 2000 as the athletic director for the Cubs. Leo proudly bled blue and gold. The high school gym was named in his honor. He was instrumental in establishing the current Central Minnesota Conference. Leo was inducted into the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame, the Kimball Hall of Fame, and was awarded many other honors. Leo was never idle. He continued to stay active with the school, running the scorer’s table or officiating for various sports. He was a vital member of the Kimball Chamber of Commerce and the Kimball Golf Club, serving multiple terms as president and various other positions throughout the years. He had short business ventures at a pizza shop and a printing company. He also began assisting Dingmann Funeral Care with funerals and visitations. When Leo was not busy giving back, he found time to golf and travel with Marilyn. Their favorite travel destinations were to see their two daughters in Chicago and the U.K. Leo always made spending time with his family a priority. Nothing brought him greater joy than being in their presence, especially his grandchildren. Leo is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn of Kimball; daughters, Tamara Jones (Antwan Conley) of Chicago, and Jennifer Wirth (Brian Miller) of Shippon, England; grandchildren, Eurielle, Zacchaeus, Danny, Emily, Kenny and Ally; siblings, Allen (Carla) of Forest Lake, Leona Truax of Hewitt and Edith Brasel of Glenwood; sister-in-law, Brenda Wirth of Hopkins; and nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alvin, Richard and Roy; brother-in-law, Wes Truax; nephew, Brian Truax; godchild, Shellie Trimble; and family friend, Siow-Fang Khoo. Josh Thom, Mike Wirth, Joe Stangle, Pat Tubrity, Tom Marquardt, Bill McLaughlin, Brian Miller and Mel Knudsen will serve as casket bearers.
