Remember Flag Day, June 14

Patriotism is a value that brings Americans together, and I think most people agree that such values are worth nurturing.  The older generations have served our country in many ways, and it is inspiring to see the younger generations embracing good citizenship with similar enthusiasm. Young people often tell me that the stories and examples from their parents and grandparents have inspired them.  It’s powerful when older people model patriotic values for younger people. I think learning flag etiquette and showing respect for the American flag are small things we all can do. For example, when flags come by as part of a parade, you show respect by facing the flag, removing your cap, and standing with your right hand over your heart. For additional information, an instructional brochure on flag etiquette is available from my office by calling 651-201-1332.  We are fortunate that our younger generations are very patriotic today, but we need to continue to encourage and educate.  At this time, I especially applaud the collaborative efforts of Minnesota’s U.S. senators Mark Dayton and Norm Coleman to pass a Constitutional amendment to prohibit desecration of the American flag. This amendment, which is on the verge of passing and due for a vote later this month, would demonstrate our commitment to patriotism and everything the flag represents.  Wednesday, June 14, is Flag Day, and I encourage everyone on that day to reflect on the timeless values embodied by our star-spangled banner and to display our flag proudly.
