Jack E. Sunderland, age 74, of South Haven, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
A Celebration of Jack’s Life will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. with a Remembrance Service at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the South Haven City Hall Community Room.
Jack Ernest Sunderland was born April 4, 1949, in Pekin, Illinois to William and Ethel (Linner) Sunderland. As a young boy, Jack moved with his family to Crystal, Minnesota. He graduated from Robbinsdale Cooper High School. In 1968, Jack was united in marriage to Phyllis Miller in South Dakota. Together they lived in various communities, prior to moving to Annandale, and eventually to South Haven where they have resided for the past 50 years. Over the years he worked for the Food Engineering Corp. in Plymouth, prior to retiring from New Flyer in St. Augusta.
Jack was a longtime member of the South Haven Sportsmen’s Club. Over the years he served as treasurer, provided firearm safety, ATV safety, as well as volunteering at the fish fry. He also volunteered for the Minnesota Broken Wing Connection. Jack was a collector of coins and liked to try his luck at the casino or at a local meat raffle. During quieter times, he would hunt or spend time in the presence of nature. He also enjoyed following NASCAR.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Phyllis of South Haven; children, Jim (Kelly) of South Haven and Char (Jeff) Bloss of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Michael and Amber Bloss and Holli and William Sunderland; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Travis, and Allison; and many other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jerry; and great-granddaughter, Rosemary.
