Annandale School Board: Enrollment increasing

The Annandale District 876 School Board met Tuesday, May 29, for its regular monthly meeting at the Annandale Elementary School Community Room.

Superintendent Tim Prom updated the board on this year’s enrollment figures and projected enrollment and class sizes for 2018-19.

On May 19, 2017, at the end of the 2016-17 school year, the district’s enrollment was 1,808 students.

When the three schools opened last fall, Aug. 28, 2017, the enrollment was 1,867, Annandale Elementary 871 students, Annandale Middle School 464 students and Annandale High School 532 students.

When classes ended this past school year on Thursday, May 25, the total enrollment was 1,865 students. AES, 875 students; AMS 463 and AHS 527 students.

The enrollment varied from month to month from a low of 1,857 on Oct. 13, 2017, to a high of 1,872 on Dec. 13, 2017.

Class sizes for 2018-19

The board heard projects for average class sizes for grades K-6 for the 2018-19 school year.

The average class size for kindergarten will be 19.1 with seven sections next year.

First grade will see an average class size of 21, with seven sections. That is an increase of one section over the 2017-18 school year.

Second grade will see six sections with an average class size of 21.3.

Third grade will have six sections, an average of 25.5 students per section.

Fourth grade will have six sections with an average of 24.8 per classroom.

Fifth grade will see an average class size of 25.7 with six sections.

Sixth grade will see an average class size of 25 with six sections.

Grades 7-12 are not measured in sections. Enrollment for these grades are projected to be the following in 2018-19: Seventh grade 179, and increase of 35 students; Eighth grade 144, a decrease of three students; ninth grade 147, an increase of 19 students; 10th grade 128, a decrease of five students; 11th grade 133, same as last year; and 12th grade 133, no change from last year.

Q comp report submitted

District Curriculum Director Kathy Holahan, presented the school district’s Q-comp report. All school districts participating in the program must submit a summary report to the state annually on its participation in the program.

Q-comp is a voluntary incentive program that allows local school districts and exclusive representatives of the teachers to design and collectively bargain a plan that meets the five components of the law passed by the 2005 Legislature.

Holahan was not optimistic that Annandale would meet the district’s goals for 2018-19.

"We will have a better idea when final test scores are in later this summer," Holahan said.

Other action

In other action:

■ The board accepted the resignations of Bridget Mathiowetz (AES). Ryan DeRoeck (AES), Wanda Kramer (AHS), Brooke Zumbush (ESFE) and Troy Davidson (AMS).

■ The board approved the following new contracts: Michelle Macalena, AMS Dean of Students; Elizabeth Lessin, AMS-AHS art; Rosanne Hansen, AES art; Laurie Lippenes, AMS math; Samantha Statz, AES first grade teacher.

■ The board recognized Olivia Munson who was chosen Best in Category for Digital Photography at the 17th annual Minnesota State High School League Region 5A Visual Arts Festival.

■ The board approved the termination of two AMS probationary teachers.

■ The board approved AMS Principal Jeff Erickson’s recommendation of granting tenure to AMS counselor Trina Mastley.

■ The next monthly board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, June 25, at the Annandale Elementary School Community Room.
