
Nina H. Doorneweerd, 93, formerly of Buffalo and Annandale, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at the Covenant Shores Care Center in Mercer Island, Wash.
Memorial services will be held at the Covenant Shores Care Center Chapel with an inurnment service at Lake View cemetery, Silver Creek, at a later date.
Nina is survived by her four children, Delores (Floyd) Ingersoll of Buffalo, Dennis (Fay) of DeLand Fla., Carol (George) Paschal of Sammamish, Wash., Colleen (Jeff) Berglund of Bloomington; grandchildren, Roxann (Doug) Ashworth, Al (Deb) Ingersoll, Renee (Max) Saint-Louis, Grant (Robin) Ingersoll, David (Danielle) Doorneweerd, Susan (Mark) Reudelhuber, Mark (Cate) Paschal, Jeff (Leslie) Paschal, Jason (friend, Ana Castillo) Paschal and Leigh Paschal. She is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren and her sister, Dorothy Giberson of Renton, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986; her parents; four sisters and one brother and a granddaughter.
Nina was born to Hendrik and Jacoba (Senf) VanGiffen, in Backus. After her high school graduation she moved to Maple Lake. There she met Cornelius Doorneweerd; they married on June 26, 1940. After their marriage they farmed in the Annandale area until 1959 when they sold the farm and moved into Annandale. Nina started her college career at St. Cloud State University in 1963 eventually earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree. Over the next several years she taught at Buffalo High School, St. Paul Bible College (Crown) and Bethel University.
In 1981, Corney and Nina relocated to Seattle, Wash. to be near their daughter and Nina’s extended family. The last 18 years Nina has lived at the Covenant Shores Retirement Community where she participated in many varied activities including painting, playing bridge, writing for the newsletter, organizing the coffee shop and the display case. Family and friends were also recipients of her pie making skills.
