Wright County Conference expanding

The Wright County Conference is growing.

The conference will expand from nine to 10 teams in the spring of 2012 when Holy Family joins its ranks, and will get even larger next fall when New London-Spicer enters the fold.

The Wright County Conference currently consists of Annandale, Dassel-Cokato, Delano, Glencoe-Silver Lake, Litchfield, Waconia, Hutchinson, Mound-Westonka and Orono.

The Minnesota State High School League placed Holy Family into the conference after it was voted out of the Minnesota River Conference and applications to three other conferences were rejected.

New London-Spicer was voted out of the West Central Conference and also applied to three other conferences for membership, including the Wright County Conference, which accepted its bid for membership.

With the addition of New London-Spicer, the conference will feature 11 teams next fall with conference officials reportedly open to adding even more schools in the future.

Even if more schools are added before the fall of 2012, the recent changes mean the Wright County Conference will be split into halves for football.

Annandale will be joined in one division by New London-Spicer, Dassel-Cokato, Glencoe-Silver Lake and Litchfield. The other division will be made up of Holy Family, Delano, Waconia, Hutchinson, Mound-Westonka and Orono.

Each team will play all the teams in their division, a few from the other division, and one non-conference game.

All the non-conference games are expected to be against teams from the Granite Ridge Conference, which recently entered into a scheduling agreement with the Wright County Conference for football.

All five teams in Annandale’s division of the conference will be in Class 3A for football while all the teams in the other division of the conference will be Class 4A, with the exception of Holy Family, which is currently in 3A but is expected to become a 4A school in the future.

No Wright County Conference divisions are in place for any sports other than football, however, they could be installed if one or more teams are added to the conference in the future.
