The Cardinal girls cross country team proved their mettle last week at two highly competitive meets while the boys side continues to see improvement.
On Monday, Sept. 19, the girls squad ran season best times on the Pierz section course to come up with a second place finish out of 12 teams.
The girls who ran "extremely well," according to coach Scott Massmann, were behind only the state-ranked Cathedral.
"Everyone ran their season best time, and this is on the section course," Massmann said.
Cousins Taylor and Courtney Alama lead the Cardinal pack with their 7th and 11th place finishes, respectively.
On the boys side, Alex Morningstar once again lead the group to their 10th place finish. There were 18 complete teams.
"We’re making some progress," Massmann said. "The middle of the field is kind of where we expected to be, but there were some teams we felt if we had run better, we could have beaten."
Morningstar finished 45th overall and Carter Gjevre was 49th.
On Thursday, Sept. 22, the Cardinals traveled to Cold Spring where they were the only single A team competing.
Taylor Alama’s fifth place finish lead the girls team to its fourth place overall finish.
Marina Chapman came in eighth.
"All of the girls who beat Taylor in the 2A pole, so she was fighting against some incredible competition," Massmann said.
The boys team placed eighth out of the nine 2A schools, lead by senior Clint Wendt.
"Five of our seven guys ran their best times of the year in their second meet of the week. We felt good about that," Massmann said.
"They really executed their game plan and are starting to believe in themselves."
The Cardinals compete again on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Dassel-Cokato at 4:15 p.m.
