The energy and excitement levels on campus are elevated, for student-athletes as well as coaches, as practices begin for fall sports at the high school!
Within the next three weeks, each of our fall sports teams will begin their competitive schedule, which can be viewed on Annandale’s online activities calendar (link to calendar listed on homepage of school district website).
A large number of our students have put in many hours of hard work over the summer to prepare for the upcoming athletic and/or fine arts seasons. It is impressive to see the number of students in Annandale that participate in multiple extracurricular activities, which is a dying trend in other high schools around the state.
In the Annandale Public Schools, we believe that involvement in activities plays a significant role in the academic, social, and emotional development of students. It is without question that activities play a key role in shaping a positive school culture. We view the "field of competition" – whether it is a field, court, rink, stage, or theatre – as an extension of the classroom.
While we strive to make our teams as competitive as possible, our top priority is to instill in positive values and important skills that will contribute to success in later life. As a new school year begins, it is a great time to review the goals of education-based athletics and activities:
– To have fun
– To do your best
– To improve
– To conduct yourself well
– To help others succeed
– To appreciate the opponent
– To learn from both winning and losing
– To learn life skills
There is a great tradition of fan support for Annandale athletics and activities. Whether you are a student, parent, or community member, as you attend our home events as well as travel to other communities, please remember to be humble in victory, gracious in defeat, and represent Annandale in the best way possible – with top-notch sportsmanship, character, and class!
Volunteer
Lastly, for anyone interested in getting involved with supporting Annandale athletics and activities, the Cardinal Athletic Foundation – which provides financial support for all Annandale’s athletics and fine arts programs – is always looking for volunteers. Concessions at home events is CAF’s primary fundraiser, as the funds raised through concessions sales go directly to the support of Annandale’s athletics-activities programs. If interested in learning about opportunities to get involved, please contact CAF at CardinalAthleticF@gmail.com.
Thanks for your support and Go Cards!
Luke MacLean is the activities director for the Annandale School District.
